Originally a Scanian farm, it was bought by Prince Oscar and his wife Sophia in 1864 and expanded to its current size in 1874-76. Oscar II's grandchild, Gustaf VI Adolf received the palace as a wedding gift in 1905 and renovated the palace, and designed the rhododendron garden.

It is a centre for rotating exhibitions that displays views over the Sound and its culture. Kärnan is a medieval tower in Helsingborg that is also one of the most significant landmarks in the city. It is known as Kärnan in Sweden and as Kernen in Denmark, where the name means “The Core”. The tower is the remains of a Danish fortress that kept a check on the entranceway to the Baltic Sea.
