Kulturhistoriska Museet

Museum-of-Cultural-History-Lund is well known for its culture and rich heritage. The history of the city relates to that of the monuments and landmarks in the city. Museums are the perfect places to study the history of any place and the Museum of Cultural History provides the perfect insight into the lifestyles of the people of that place and their traditions.

It is locally known as Kulturhistoriska Museet and is located in Lund’s Tegnérsplats. The museum is popularly known as Kulturen. It is an open-air museum and has farmhouses, town houses and pastor’s houses from entire southern Sweden. The museum houses an impressive collection of porcelain, pottery, folk art and textiles too.

The old church from Bosebo in Småland is one of the notable places at the museum. The museum also has the Historical Museum and the Cathedral Museum to the south, in Kraftstorget. It is among the most visited place in Lund and attracts tourists in huge numbers.

The architecture of the museum and the collection it provides are the chief factors that make it that popular. A trip to Lund would virtually be incomplete without a visit to the museum that sings the glorious past of the city.

 

Martenstorget

MartenstorgetLund is a beautiful city with a rich culture and several landmarks. The Cathedrals, Universities and Churches are the chief landmarks in the city. Mårtenstorget is a square in central Lund that is also one of the major landmarks in the city.

The square is the place of livestock trade in the city and was called the square Oxtorget in the olden days. The current name is derived from the medieval St Martin’s Church that governed the southwest of the square. The square is a busy place with many people thronging the place at any given time.

It dates back to 1842 and is now Lund market hall, Krognoshuset and Lunds Konsthall. Apart from these, the square also offers chief outlets of Domus Store, one of the savings bank offices and McDonald’s restaurant. The square is currently used as a local outlet from 6.30 to 14.00 hrs on weekdays and for parking at the other times.

One of the busiest areas in the city, Mårtenstorget is located south of Lund and is essentially a fruit, vegetable and flower market. The Art Gallery stands to the rear of the square that has a collection of modern Swedish art and exhibitions of periodic work by famous artists.

 

Lundagard

LundagardLund is a beautiful city to visit and offers a lot of opportunities to people with different tastes. Lundagård is a scenic park in the city that is located north of the Lund Cathedral. The park incidentally features prominently in the life of the Lund University. It is located between the Lund University and the Lund Cathedral with Kungshuset in between.

The park was a walled garden for a very long time. Its gate is now the entrance to the Kulturen museum. The beautiful park features other buildings also, including the AF Castle, Palaestra et Odeum and the Lund University Historical Museum.

The park houses the Kungshus (King's House) known as Lundagårdshus which was built in the 16th century. The building acted as the residence for the Danish king Frederick II. The King’s House was occupied by the Lund University till 1882 after which the present nearby buildings were built.
The history of the park is closely connected to the history of the city itself. Universitetsplatsen is the area between Kungshuset, Palaestra and the University building. Between the Historical Museum and the AF Castle lies the Tegnérsplatsen that features the statue of Esaias Tegnér.

 

Lund University

Lund-UniversityLund University is one of the major landmarks in the city. The magnificent building is famously known for its brilliant architecture and academics alike. It is located in southernmost Sweden. The University is one of the largest institutions for research and education in the entire province of Scandinavia.

The University is regularly ranked among the top 100 universities of the world. Founded in 1666, it is the second oldest Swedish university which was built in 1882 by Helgo Zettervall. The University has additional campuses in other cities like Malmö and Helsingborg and belongs to the League of European Research Universities.

Lund University is located adjacent to the Lund Cathedral near the Lundagård Park. It is internationally recognized as Scandinavia’s largest research university. The library facilities at the university are extremely popular and of the topmost league. The library building in the campus is a landmark in itself and an architectural brilliance.

Kungshuset is the oldest university building that currently houses the Department of Philosophy. The main university library is known as Lunds Universitetsbibliotek. The place is frequented by the tourists and is one of the famous tourist attractions in the city.

 

Lund Cathedral

Lund-CathedralLund Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece and is the seat of the bishop of Lund, of the church of Sweden. There is a mention of the cathedral being built around 1080s. It was founded by the Danish king Knut IV and is the oldest Romanesque church in Sweden.

The cathedral has twin towers that are popularly known as the “Lads of Lund” (Lunna Påga) which are among the prominent landmarks in the city. It is located in the heart of Lund and acts as a reminder of Lund being the oldest archiepiscopal see in the Oresund Region.

The church has been constructed in the traditional basilica style that includes half-rounded arches to support the ceiling. It has been constructed using granite blocks and sandstone. The city of Lund is the religious center of Denmark and has control over many monasteries, nunneries and priories around the cathedral.

The 55 meters high towers of the cathedral are the prime attractions, along with the lovely bronze doors at the entrance, and the astronomical clock. The cock plays twice a day and is one of the major attractions for the tourists visiting the cathedral. The south aisle offers an information counter and hosts various exhibitions.
