Malmo Opera

The Malmö Opera and Music Theatre is the popular opera house in the city and is locally known as Musikteater. The city has a rich musical culture with the residents enjoying musicals and theater enthusiastically. Designed by architect Sigurd Lewerentz, the opera house was built in 1944. An opera company, by the same name as that of the theatre, organizes seasons of opera in the theatre.

The opera house was known as the Malmö City Theatre till 1992 and is one of the largest auditoriums in Scandinavia. It houses many organizations and was built in the form of an enclosed amphitheatre to provide greater viewing possibilities. The opera house has a large revolving stage and is used for operetta and musical performances, along with being used for opera.

It is a major tourist attraction as it has an intricately designed foyer with marble staircases and works of art by famous artists. Located at the centre of the Öresund region, the place offers rich and quality cultural life. It has around 1508 seats and a beautiful fountain in the vicinity that creates magical ambience. The opera house organizes performances for children as well as young people that range from new operatic works to musicals of international standards.
