Royal Danish Playhouse

Royal-Danish-PlayhouseThe Royal Danish Playhouse is situated on the harbor front in central Copenhagen. The Playhouse played a major role in the development of the waterfront into a recreational area that is as famous as the ones in other major cities of the world. The Playhouse acts as a building for the Royal Danish Theatre.

Designed by Lundgaard & Tranberg, a Danish architectural practice, the building was constructed to provide a venue for dramatic theatre. The architectural design of the building has been much appreciated and awarded. The building has been built in long deep brown and slim brick, specially developed for the project. The exteriors are however covered by glass.

The foyer runs along the entire length of the Playhouse and offers beautiful views of the harbor. A restaurant and a café adorn the foyer. A major part of the building projects over the water and the waterfront lets the pedestrians take a long walkway covered with oak planks, placed in a way to give a Venetian-style rustic look to the surroundings. The Playhouse was opened in February 2008 and offers a lot more than an ultimate theatrical experience.

The praiseworthy architecture of the building makes it a major tourist attraction in Copenhagen. It has two main auditoriums with 650 and 200 seats respectively and an additional 100 seats in the Studio Stage. The foyer and terrace are also used to host events, concerts and other activities.

Copenhagen Opera House

Copenhagen-Opera-HouseThe Copenhagen Opera House is located on Dock Island in Copenhagen Harbor and is the national opera house of Denmark. It is one among the most modern opera houses in the world and is also one of the most expensive opera houses ever built. The estimated construction costs are believed to exceed $500 million.

The construction of the opera house was begun in June 2001, which was completed on October 1, 2004. The place was inaugurated in the presence of Mærsk McKinney Møller, Danish Prime Minister and Queen Margrethe II on January 15, 2005. It is a gift to the Danish state by Mærsk McKinney Møller. Seventeen meter wide canals have been dug up on either sides of the opera house that accentuate its placement on the island.

Located just opposite the Amalienborg castle, it has been built in alignment with it as well as The Marble Church. It is under the administration of Royal Danish Theatre and has one main and five other stages. These six stages are connected and allow the movement of large setups in and out. A small stage called Takkelloftet (black box theatre) is also included along with the main stage, for experimental theatre.

The opera house has approximately 1500 seats, individually angled to provide better theatrical experience. It has been designed by Henning Larsen in association with Mærsk McKinney Møller. The place can be reached by Route 903 shuttles of the Copenhagen Harbor Buses. Route 66 of the regular buses connects the opera house to the Central Station.

Stortorget

StortorgetStortorget is a public square locally known as The Big Square in Sweden. The place is located in Gamla Stan in the old part of Stockholm in Sweden. Being the oldest square in the town, it is the historical centre around which the urban collection grew gradually. The public square is one of the most visited places in the city and hosts demonstrations and performances.

Famously known for the annual Christmas market that offers handicrafts and food, the square gained popularity gradually and with time, unlike other European cities. Northern part of the square houses the Stock Exchange Building known as Börshuset. The Nobel Museum and the Nobel Library can be visited at the place too.

The square was initially a junction with criss-cross tracks which later developed into the current narrow streets. A pillory known as Kåken was located at the middle of the square. It is one of the main squares of Malmö and has beautiful old houses.

Stortorget is conveniently located near the ferry port and train station. It is also connected to other major shopping places through a pedestrian road. The architecture of the area is old rococo style and that adds to the rustic look of the place. The square is an ideal place to visit when touring Malmö.
